A few months back, the Year 8 pupils who attend Kyle's classes learnt a lot of very interesting facts about Washington State, Kyle's home state back in the US.

They had to write out an article, using the notes they had taken, about Washington State.

Camille did very well so here's her article below.

Now, before reading it, follow the link so as  to make sure where Washington State is located.

 

Washington State is in the North West of the United States.

There is Oregon in the south, Idaho in the east, Canada in the north and The Pacific Ocean in the west.

You can see a lot of things.

There are various mounts such as Mount St Helens, Mount Rainer, or Mount Baker.

 

Volcanoes

 

You can visit the Olympic rainforest, it's not far from Seattle.

There are big companies such as the Boeing Company, Microsoft Corporation, Amazon or Bangor Nuclear Submarine Base.

 Mount St Helens is known because there was the most catastrophic eruption ever on May 18, 1980.

Fifty seven people were killed. 250 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles of railways and 185 miles of highway were destroyed.

 Mount Rainier is the highest peak with 14411 feet. Its last eruption was in 1894.

 Mount Baker is known thanks to its ski area which set the world record for recorded snowfall in a single ski season with 95 feet.

Seattle is known as “The emerald City”. It’s the result of a contest held in 1981.The reference is to the evergreen forest of the area. Seattle residents are known as Seattleites.

 

Seattle is the birthplace of rock legend Jimi HENDRIX and the rock music style known as “grunge” which was made famous by local groups such as Nirvana, Sound Garden or Pearl Jam.

 

Starbuck

 

Seattle has a reputation for heavy coffee consumption companies founded or based in Seattle such as Starbuck Coffee which is Seattle’s best coffee place.

 

If you want to eat you can go to the Space Needle restaurant.

It turns each 45 minutes.

The old rain forest is located on the Olympic peninsula in western Washington State. It’s one of the few temperate rain forests in the U.S and also one of the largest within the Olympic National Park. The forest is protected from commercial exploitation.
